Chapter 36
âYou want me to do what?â
âHand this letter to the mom.â
Elena looked at Travis, her pretty brown eyes questioning him. âYou canât be serious? Weâre talking about the mother of the two missing children?â
âYes.â
She lifted both her eyebrows at the same time. âThe one who was pulled out of the ocean?â
He nodded. âYes, her. Now, just do it, please.â
Elena swallowed. She wasnât ready to let this go yet. There were more questions. âWhy?â
âDoes it matter?â Travis said. âI will give you seven hundred and fifty thousand, remember? That means not asking any more questions.â
âBut, Travis⦠this seems⦠I need to know what the letter says, no?â
He shook his head. âThe less you know, the better it is for youâfor your own protection.â
âOkay, I guess that makes sense in case something goes wrong,â she said, looking down at the letter in her hand.
âYou have access,â he said. âYou have the key to her room and can let yourself in. Tell the security officer youâre cleaning the room. Then, hand it to her as soon as youâre inside.â
âNo. I canât do that,â she said, handing the letter back to her brother. âTheyâll come after me, asking me questions.â
He placed it back into her hand. âYou say you found it in a bathroom, one of the public ones, and you thought you would give it to her. Just bat your eyelashes a lot, and theyâll believe you.â
âWhy not give it to the police, and then they can give it to her?â
âI want to make sure she reads it. They might keep it from her, so she wonât even have a chance.â
Elena sighed; she gave the letter back to him again. âI donât know, Travis. This is⦠itâs justâ¦.â
âMoney enough to buy yourself a house,â he said luringly. âNo more having to clean up other peopleâs messes.â
That made her stop talking. She stared at him, and he could tell she was thinking about it. She just needed one more little push.
âMaybe you could buy yourself a pair of Jimmy Chooâs like youâve always wanted. Remember the red ones we saw in that magazine once?â
âGive me that,â she said and pulled the letter out of his hand.
âThatâs my girl,â he said and smiled. He kissed her forehead, then whispered. âNow, go before anyone sees us together.â
She took off, grabbed her cart, and pushed it down the hallway with the letter tucked inside her front pocket. As she was out of his sight, she stopped, pulled the letter out, and looked at it.
Then, she did the one thing she wasnât supposed to.
She opened it.
